Emergency Relief

In times of disaster and other emergencies, Korean Red Cross provides essential items to those in need such as food and sanitation items.

When disaster strikes, the Red Cross immediately dispatches mobile cafeterias, mobile washrooms and mobile shower stalls for disaster victims, volunteers and staff. The Red Cross also mobilizes special 1,400-member volunteer units of amateur radio operators who act as reliable communication channels when traditional, electronic communication channels fail to function as a result of the disaster. In certain situations where the damage is extremely severe, they become the only means for us to accurately assess the field and respond accordingly

To prepare local communities for future disasters, the Red Cross also periodically stocks up on food and non-food relief items for over 10,000 households on average per year.

Social Service

In times of non-emergencies, we distribute the same relief items to low-income families and
other socioeconomically vulnerable groups. In particular, the Red Cross targets marginalized households who are unique to Republic of Korea such as households where children are living without their parents (not necessarily orphans), senior citizens living alone and migrants/immigrants (such as multicultural families and foreign migrant workers).

For these specific three groups, the Red Cross is trying to increase their quality of life under the Heemang Poongcha (¡°Windmill of Hope¡±) campaign. It aims to provide various livelihood and psychosocial activities such as providing scholarships to poor students living without their parents, conducting frequent home visits to check upon the living conditions of senior citizens living alone and running Korean language classes for non-Korean Asian women immigrating to South Korea after marrying Korean men.

The Red Cross operates a total of 64 Red Cross volunteer centers, 15 of which are located inside the military facilities and run programmes for mental and physical stabilization and recovery of hospitalized soldiers.
