Your Excellency President Roh Moo-hyun and First Lady Kwon Yang-soo;
Dr. Juan Manuel Suarez del Toro, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies;
Honorable delegates of member Societies;
Distinguished guests from the United Nations, international and regional organizations and non-governmental organizations;
Ladies and gentlemen,
On behalf of the National Red Cross of the Republic of Korea, I am deeply honored to welcome you to the General Assembly of the International Federation. My heartfelt thanks go to the Federation, National Societies and the Korean government for their unwavering support for this historic gathering. I would also like to extend a special welcome to our brothers from the North who are here with us today.
This is the centennial year for the Korean National Red Cross, which now boasts 70,000 volunteers, 170,000 youth members and 3,000 staff members, all standing humbled by the accomplishments of our Society in defending humanitarianism amidst the ups and downs in the turbulent history of the country during the past one hundred years. As we reflect back on the past 100 years and seek a new vision for the next century, we are well aware that greater challenges await the country and the people in the new era.
Indeed, the political, economic and social changes in Korea have been phenomenal, especially during the past half-century. The world, too, has changed, and continues to evolve.
However, in too many corners of the world, humankind is still threatened by armed conflicts and natural disasters that deprive countless people of their lives and dignity. The effect of these crises quickly spreads over national borders in this age of globalization, which is widening the socio-economic gaps between the rich and the poor of the world, as well.
The International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement has been at the lead in alleviating the hardship suffered by people caught in these crises, both man-made and natural. The Movement has also come to be recognized as a key player in peaceful reconciliation and conflict resolution. Always faithful to its Fundamental Principles, the Movement is the world's premier humanitarian agency and its proud history is viewed with awe and affection. Even as I speak, our humanitarian workers are out there in the field to help people recovering from the Indian Ocean Tsunami and the Pakistani earthquake, to name just a few places.
But there is much more work ahead. Surely, the Movement will continue to shoulder the same honor and duty in the 21st century. The work, I believe, must be based on the recognition that natural disasters are increasingly man-made in their origin. Deforestation and other exploitation of nature, rash industrialization, ignorance about the environment, and reckless use of natural resources are destroying nature's balance.
The humanitarian community must take a more pro-active stance in preparedness as well as in timely response to disasters. In addition, now is the time to take into serious consideration the root causes of calamities. Therefore, the task requires greater cooperation and coordination, not only among components of the Movement, but also between the Movement and external actors.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The ideas and insights generated during this gathering can serve as the building blocks of a roadmap for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in its advocacy for the power of humanity.
I sincerely hope that we will all muster the best of our wisdom, so that this assembly may be remembered as a global festival that brought hope for a better future for all humankind. Let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of humanitarianism in a way that effectively responds to the challenges of the present century.
Once again, I am deeply honored that the Republic of Korea National Red Cross is able to receive you here in Seoul. Please enjoy your time and please feel at home while you are away from your home.
