Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends; It is indeed a great pleasure for me to welcome you to Seoul on behalf of the Republic of Korea National Red Cross. It goes without saying that we are honored to have been selected to host this year¡¯s General Assembly of the Federation and Council of Delegates. Though I¡¯m sure many of you are feeling somewhat tired after your long flights, we cannot help but be touched by the moving spirit of the collective power of humanity filling this room. This year, the Republic of Korea National Red Cross is celebrating the centennial anniversary of its foundation. We take humble pride in our long and eventful history and, like all of you, will continue to devote ourselves to alleviating undeserved human sufferings whenever and wherever they may be found. Our Red Cross staff, volunteers and youth members have been very busy preparing for the success of this global gathering. All are ready and eager to be of assistance to you, so please do not hesitate to contact any of us for help -- we will do our best to make your stay as pleasant as possible. And also we will do our utmost to make this great international humanitarian event very hospitable as well as efficient. Korea has for many centuries been known as the land of the morning calm but today it might be better known as the land of the high noon bustle with state-of-the-art technological ventures; the traditional old exists alongside the bustling new. During your stay, I hope that you will experience for yourself something of the dynamic Korea mingled with the customary warm-heartedness of the Korean people. Thus I would be happy if you take the time to enjoy the hearts and beauty of our people and culture. All the staff and volunteers of the Korean Red Cross extend their warmest welcome to the international Red Cross and Red Crescent family. On the tables you will find various and delicious food specially prepared for you -- please relish it. All food eventually perishes but something that is non-perishable is what I want you to share with one another: that is the lofty ideals of our humanitarian efforts; peace, life and health. We are people committed to the open sharing of ideas. I truly hope the outcome of our efforts here in Korea will help us to have a productive exchange of wisdom and experiences and reach closer to these wonderful ideals. Last but not least, anticipating the fruitful success of the Federation¡¯s 15th General Assembly and the Council of Delegates, I would like to propose a toast. Ladies and gentlemen, Please fill your empty glasses and raise them with me in a spirit of mutual salute to our successful meetings, to our continued health and to a brighter future for our Movement. Cheers!
